warmth

After hiking 14 miles straight and going up and down 500 feet, I made it to Neel's gap last night, and am very thankful for doing so. After three freezing cold nights, a hostel and a nice homemade meal are very welcoming. I was wearing everything I own and had my sleeping bag cinched up all the way, and was still shivering. But now, I am warm...for now.

Hiking is going well so far. Everyone I meet is very nice--southern hospitalilty at its best! It's taking its toll on my legs and feet, but that's to be expected.

Supposed to rain for the next five days. Get to try out that pack cover!

hope life off the beaten track is treating you well. same ol' same ol' up here... well except that it turned out we've been being watched by aliens for like a real long time. we found out because these malevolent alien overlords revealed themselves, announced that they were pissed at our government, and unceremoniously leveled most of our metropolitan areas. it was a real bummer for a while, but there are a bunch of survivors so it's been cool. with the supply chain crippled, gas now costs over $15 a gallon, but shaw's has been giving out coupons for ten cents off a gallon with a $50 purchase so that has helped. yeah, so take your time getting back up here...there's a lot of rebuilding and cleaning up going on and if you time it just right you can show up and ask if there's anything you can help with, but it'll already be done and you can say 'oh man, i really wanted to help.' that's like a way of getting credit for helping but you don't have to do work. nobody will remember you showed up late. or, if you want, i could even mention your name in passing to some of the folks working on rebuilding and be like, 'have you seen logan? he was just here cleaning up and i got him some lunch, but i can't find him. i'll just leave it in the fridge.'

yeah, i guess the situation is a little weird. a few of us got together and Independence Day was on, and it was funny in a sort of morose way. i don't know if funny is the right way to describe it. it's just that i think back to when that movie first came out, and how it was kind of exciting to see the buildings get blown up by aliens. now that that has basically happened in real life almost exactly the same way, it's like this bizarre cosmic coincidence and nobody knows how to react to it. oh, by the way, i forgot to mention, it turns out the aliens weren't even pissed at our government...they were pissed at the chinese government for the whole tibet thing and so they apologized but they didn't stay and help clean up. it's like, thanks for the apology but there's like trillions of dollars of infrastructure damage and millions of casualties. the whole thing is stupid.

ok, well, keep warm and dry. cheers, buddy.
